This project is a translation of the lyrics of iconic French anarchist poet/singer Georges Brassens into English. Pierre is currently at work on an illustrated book of the translated poems along with a CD of the songs performed in English.
Georges Brassens is an icon in the world of French music, yet he is largely unknown in the States. Brassens, who performed from the nineteen-fifties into the late nineteen-seventies, was revered in France for his complex, witty, and shocking poetry. His songs, which weaved hilarious tales of love, sex, and everyday life while condemning the hypocrisies of society, contained rich poetry and explicit imagery. They were banned on the radio when he first appeared, but Brassens quickly became a best-selling star of the French musical tradition.
Pierre has translated a collection of Brassens' songs, strictly adhering to the rhyme scheme, meter, and meaning of the original texts, while preserving their flow and lyricism in English. He is recording an album of the songs, keeping to the pared-down, simple yet alluring arrangements of the originals. Brassens has been translated in many languages worldwide, yet attempts to translate him into English have fallen short. This project is a chance for the English speaking world to discover the work of this amazing songwriter, poet, and individual.
